How can agriculture be more attractive for young people in rural areas? Advocacy and awareness-raising campaigns can play an important role in highlighting issues, such as access to land for youth or the role of women in rural societies, and promoting agriculture as an attractive, but underrated career option for young people. Image campaigns can help to create a positive attitude towards new (agri-) businesses and thus help laying the foundations to economic growth in rural areas. Simeon Kambalame, Timveni Child and Youth Media Organization, has set up such a campaign in Malawi.

Recently, there has been a growing interest towards agribusiness amongst the youth in Malawi. Many young people have started to realize the potential which is found across the various value chains in agriculture. In order to cultivate this growing interest and help the youth create economic opportunities for themselves and their communities; GIZ Malawi and its partners are currently implementing the “Employment for Rural Women and Youth – EYA! ATVET” Project.
Timveni Child and Youth Media Organization (popularly known as Timveni), a media advocacy institution which works with young people as equal partners in development and ensures that they are part and parcel of decisions that affect them and which uses media platforms such as radio, television and social media to achieve its youth advocacy mission; is one of the implementing partners of the project and is focused on improving the image of agriculture among the youth through a radio campaign called “Ulimi Ndi Dhilu”; a catchy phrase literally translating to “Agribusiness is the real deal”.
Through radio programs and social media interaction with young people, the Ulimi Ndi Dhilu Campaign seeks to demonstrate the opportunities which are available in different agriculture value chains to young people especially young women, through practical experiences of 12 role models, who were identified from the 8 districts across Malawi, where the EYA! ATVET Project is being implemented. Young radio listeners are inspired to embrace agribusiness through weekly programs which feature each role model’s entrepreneurial journey; the challenges they encounter and how they managed to circumvent them.
The campaign has been able to successfully demonstrate that young people can explore the various value chains which are involved in agriculture as a way of creating employment for themselves and others. After noticing that many people in his community grow groundnuts and sell at very subsidized prices to vendors and that many children in his area are affected by malnutrition, Brian Anafi, a young man from Mchinji in Malawi who holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agribusiness; and who is also one of the role models of the campaign; decided to venture into peanut butter production. In 2018, when he was still in university, he partnered with two of his colleagues; Eric Anafi and Alexander Kadyam’pakeni and registered a business venture called Zafarm Limited through which he sells peanut butter among several other food staffs like spices and sausages. Hence, instead of selling his produce at a loss, he is now able to make more profits by selling already processed peanut butter through his Zafarm outlets; he makes about $300 per month, which is higher than what most employed young people earn in the country, while at the same time contributing towards the fight against malnutrition in his community. Through his venture, he has employed 10 young; thereby contributing towards youth employment in his community.
“It’s high time for young people to migrate from just conceiving agriculture as a culture or tradition and to now start embracing agriculture as a business which can assist in creating sustainable employment,” says Brian Anafi.
Through his venture, Brian has had a profound impact on fellow young people; Oswelo Kaneneni is one of the young people employed as the Shop Manager at Zafarm outlet in Bunda Campus. Oswelo is a 23 years old young man who has been working with Zafarm since 2021; through the income earned from working with Zafarm, he is able to support his family, he has secured a land where he does his own farming and has also managed to buy a bicycle to aid in his transportation.
Another important aspect which the campaign has been able to highlight is how young people can maximize their profits through agribusiness despite the challenges which exist in the agriculture sector. After realizing the potential benefits that are available in agriculture, Antony Watson, one of the role models of the campaign, transitioned from selling plastic bags and secured a piece of land where he started farming. Currently Antony is into fish farming, where he makes over $1,200 after every six months. Through his work as a role model for the campaign, he was enrolled into Fish Farming Training College to further his expertise; and be able to impart the skills to other young people in his community. Since the campaign began, he has been hosting football bonanzas in his community, which has helped him to reach out to over 350 young people with the campaign messages. On a weekly basis he offers fish farming trainings to fellow young farmers and so far he has trained over 256 people. Antony is a great example of how young people can achieve economic freedom through agribusiness while at the same time empower fellow youth.
"It has been a great experience for me, as a project officer, to see young people exploring agriculture to a greater extent and be able to create opportunities for themselves and other youths."
... says Antony and adds, "Throughout the campaign, I have come across young people who have really challenged my perception towards agriculture and have influenced my belief that through agriculture, the youths in Malawi can contribute positively to the economy ".
