Joint Action to meet the 1.5 Degree Target
This year's COP27 in Sharm El-Sheik is marked by climate disasters that have shaken the global community in 2022 and further exacerbate inequalities. To halt this trend, the Parties to the Framework Convention on Climate Change are meeting in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. The thirty years that have passed since the Convention was adopted have shown how urgent the need for action is: desertification, water scarcity and extreme weather events are worsening. Sustainable agricultural and food systems can protect the climate and secure basic livelihood needs. They are thus a crucial segment for achieving the global climate and development goals. This potential must be harnessed. To do so, the resilience of agricultural and food systems regarding the impacts of climate change must be significantly increased.
Dirk Meyer, Director-General at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, gives an outlook on the upcoming COP27. A listical presents five climate-friendly methods in agriculture. The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) discusses the importance of resilience for building climate-resilient and equitable food systems. Martina Fleckenstein, WWF, reports on the connection between climate, nutrition and biodiversity. Bettina Jahn from UN Women Germany will focus on the link between climate and gender. In addition, the Fairactivists report on the LCOY, the youth climate conference in Germany.
"Climate change hits the poorest countries hardest. At the same time, the poorest countries contribute next to nothing to climate change. In this respect, climate protection and climate adaptation are central policy fields for the Development Ministry."
- Svenja Schulze, Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development
Five Solutions in Agriculture
In agriculture, there are increasing cultivation techniques that lead to more climate-friendly and sustainable agricultural systems. For this purpose, old knowledge of integrated farming systems is being used and refined with technical and soil-conserving tools.
How are Climate and Food Security related? – Opinions from different perspectives
